Fountain How-To Series: Part 5 – Rewards of Adding a Design Toscano Pond Spitter

Rewards of adding a pond spitter

“Water is the driving force of all nature.”
–Leonardo de Vinci

Want to create a peaceful spot for meditation, add the lyrical sound of water music, and freshen up a pond, pool or water feature? Here are a few ideas that I hope will inspire you…

Pond Spitters will fill the demand as they are available in hundreds of whimsical, elegant and creative combinations that can be used with your water feature with the aid of a recirculating pump or alone as a statue.

How does a Pond Spitter work?

Design Toscano’s Pond Spitters actually “spit” a steady stream of water, so that with the help of an added water pump kit, your pond or pool works in the same manner as a self-contained water fountain recycling the water. To work the Pond Spitter does need to be fastened to a water pump. Each spitter is unique and may require a different size pump; check the descriptions of your chosen spitter for the recommended pump (we offer an assortment of UL-listed pumps ranging from 120 to 1,650 gallons per hour). There are care and operating directions on each spitter’s info page at DesignToscano.com for your convenience. Then all you need to do is to submerge the pump into some water, hook up your favorite spitter and you will have an unbelievable focal point in your garden along with calming sounds of water music.

What types of Pond Spitters are there, and what materials are they made from?

Design Toscano’s Pond Spitters are piped statues that come in a wide range of styles – whimsical, fun, elegant and creative designs ranging from small frogs to large elephants, gargoyles to mermaids and even children playing. Our Resin Spitters utilize hand cast designer resin which is a polyresin and crushed stone mixture, piped with copper or brass tubing, topped with a hand-painted finish with a protective UV coating. Design Toscano also carries a huge selection of Bronze Spitters which, like our bronze statues, have been cast in the traditional lost wax method and expertly finished with hand applied brown sepia tones or in shades of emerald green verde patina. These heirloom quality Bronze Pond Spitters will age gracefully, enhancing your garden with long lasting beauty.

 Advantages of a Garden Fountain

The advantages of adding a piped statue or pond spitter to your water feature or water garden are numerous. Here are just a few of the excellent benefits:

  • The lyrical sound of falling water will help drown out noise pollution and promote tranquility in your garden.
The calming sounds will help you to relax and lessen stress which is shown to have health benefits.
  • You can easily create a peaceful serene spot for meditation and a spiritually calm space for the Japanese art of “forest bathing” with a Pond Spitter water feature and lush green growing plants and trees.
  • A Pond Spitter will help to refresh and to cool off your yard on a hot summer day.
  • By adding art and beauty as focal point, a Design Toscano Pond Spitter added to your pool or pond can become the anchor of your garden décor.
  • Providing fresh and flowing water can attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife to your garden.
  • A Pond Spitter will also help aerate the water in your pond fostering a healthy environment for fish and plants by adding oxygen using circulating water.
  • A unique Pond Spitter can even serve as a conversation starter during backyard get-togethers and socials.

Before purchasing a Pond Spitter keep in mind the place you want to install it and consider the size of the spitter so you have a good idea what it will look like. Use a yard stick or a piece of cardboard cut to the size of the spitter and place it relative to your pond, pool or water garden. Bear in mind the size of the internal piping, what the fitting size is and the required pump and tube sizes. If you purchase your pump kit from Design Toscano, we’ll include ½” and 5/8″ size tubing, fittings, pipe clamps, and a flow restrictor. If you need longer tubing than what we provide (4 feet) please contact us. Be sure to note the winter care requirements when making an investment in garden art. Generally, both piped statues and pumps should be drained and taken indoors for the winter. Allowing them to freeze will damage them.

Examples of Design Toscano’s Pond Spitters

One of my absolute favorite Pond Spitters is Design Toscano’s very own Winged Gothic Gargoyle (EU58984) finished in antique stone and piped to spout water from his historic mouth. One of our very good customers had the clever idea of setting our Winged Gothic Gargoyle up with the water cascading into her own copper cauldron.

Cheerful and whimsical Pond Spitters add a sense of playfulness and fun as they spit a steady stream of water while refreshing your garden, pond or pool. Check out our Zen garden feature, the Kohaku Asian Koi (EU59307) or the adorable Along for the Ride (QM2854700), a trio of two turtles with a frog on their back, piped to stream water, but just as cute resting in place or wading into a pond or pool. While watching this playful trio time seems to slow down and I swear I can see them move if only very, very slowly.

If you want to upgrade the appearance of your pond, pool or water garden our extensive collection of Design Toscano’s exclusive Bronze Pond Spitters will answer your needs with a classic and unique focal point. Or create multiple points of focus with a pair – or a flock – of elegant Bronze Cranes such as Large Curved Neck (SU2210) and the Large Straight Neck (SU2205) with graceful elongated necks wading by the edge of your pond.

It’s raining cats and dogs at Design Toscano with our playful kitties and pups. Who’s got the hose now? Our Bronze Raining Dogs Pond Spitters come in either a sepia tone (SU311) or an emerald verde bronze patina (SU5311) and are too cute with the hose they grasp in their teeth spraying water wherever you wish. For a unique long lasting focal point feature one of these realistic bronze canines on the edge of a waterfall, pond or pool.

In a place of honor on a grand scale the Mermaid of the Isle of Capri (SU4015 & SU4030) represent the finest in European gardening art. As heirloom quality Bronze Pond Spitters these lovely Mermaids, sculpted with an artist’s attention to detail, and finished with multidimensional emerald verde bronze patinas will provide you with years of enjoyment.

A timeless bronze sculpture, our spouting Florentine Lion Head (MP61038) hangs on your wall with an open mouth to spit water into your formal reflecting pool.

Design Toscano’s animal sculptures and fountains are unique accessories, adding life and motion to your water garden, pool or pond, and helping to create a cool oasis. Attract birds to bathe in your yard with the lovely sounds of splashing water and assisting in drowning out ambient noise with one or more of our exclusive Pond Spitters.

Set the scene, consider making your own mini-pond as some of our creative customers have done and using a molded plastic pool, huge flower pot, galvanized tub or even a 5 gallon bucket, a Pond Spitter and a few rocks or plants.

Design Toscano’s Pond Spitters collection is so extensive that I hope our garden décor might inspire you to construct a pond or water feature if you don’t have one already!
