Statues of the Buddha are one of the best known forms of Asian-themed decor. Travel to eastern Asia and hundreds of Buddha sculptures of all sizes can be seen in ancient temples, on the sides of mountains, in gardens, homes, and in restaurants and other places of business. Although we will find more Buddha sculptures in Bangkok, Chang Mai, and Hong Kong, we can also find statues of the Buddha in some restaurants, gardens, and stores much closer to home.
Whether used in a religious sense or as Asian decor, this classic statue is popular because it acts as a lovely symbol of peace, good will, and inner happiness. There are also several ways to showcase the qualities of high quality Buddha statues including the following ideas:
A quiet corner of the garden: Since gardens tend to act as a peaceful oasis, this should be easy enough. However, if we also use the backyard to swim in the pool, play badminton, or throw occasional parties, the Buddha statue will probably be better off away from such activities. Adequate places to display it might be a spot between two bushes, in a corner of the backyard, or in other, more secluded areas of the garden. To highlight the importance and beauty of the sculpture, consider installation of a stone path that leads to it and is, in turn, decorated with Asian garden statues or any type of peaceful decor.
Beneath the shade of a favorite tree: Stories and legends of the Buddha have him meditating beneath a big, Banyon tree. Although large fig trees are absent from most gardens in North America, the sculpture will look right at home beneath a tree of any size. Whether it’s a pine, oak, or maple, a favorite tree works best, and the bigger the better. Place the statue on a small platform to accentuate its blend of class and beauty, or, for a more natural look, directly on the ground. This works especially well for a large Buddha statue.
In conjunction with water decor: A Buddha statue is a wonderful accompaniment to the peaceful sounds of flowing water, and especially with Asian-themed decor like the Cascading Bamboo Sculptural Fountain. The statue works best when placed close enough to the fountain to hear the sounds of the water, and if the statue is small, we might also want to put it right next to the fountain.
Inside the home: Many Buddha statues also work just as well when used as unique interior decor. The best spots to show such sculptures are in personal libraries and other rooms that lend themselves to a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Smaller sculptures can be displayed on shelves, with other fine accents, and lend an interesting touch when placed on a pedestal at the end of a hallway. Larger statues can influence the atmosphere of a room when they are placed in a corner or other out of the way spot where they can be admired by whoever walks in.
In a small alcove of a store: Place fine, high quality decor like the “Avalokitesvara Buddha” Garden Statue in a small alcove or other niche, and it can be easily admired by clients. Once again, if the statue is small enough, it will look better when displayed on a pedestal or other structure that puts it at eye level with most customers. Showing the statue like this also makes it easier to accentuate it with candles or small flower vases on either side.
